Community Garden

The Parkland community garden was established in 2009. With the assistance of our funders, and a lot of effort from garden members and residents, the garden was constructed using wooden frames and filled with soil and compost. There are 32 plots and each plot measures 12 x 4’. There are also ‘Community plots’, or communal plots, in which gardeners plant potatoes, zucchini, radishes, tomatoes and onions to be shared. These communal plots are located at the north and south end of the garden . In the middle of the garden there is a flower garden where perennials grow. This flower garden is bordered by benches, and we encourage visitors to sit a while and enjoy the peace and beauty of our Parkland Community Garden.

Renting Plots
Plots are rented for $25 and each gardener must sign a contract at the onset of the season. All funds gathered go towards the Parkland Community Association where they are used to purchase garden supplies such as hoses, spigots and vegetable plants for the communal plots. Currently the garden group will be purchasing mulch to spread along the common pathways.

Worker Bees
During the season typically there are three worker bees where gardeners are encouraged to attend. Worker bees are a great way for gardeners to meet one another and accomplish tasks in the garden. At the worker bees, communal tasks such as weeding, spreading mulch and compost are undertaken.

Benefit for Residents
The community garden has proved to be a positive endeavor for our community; it is a gathering place where residents get to know one another while attending to their plots. The garden is popular attraction and each year there are residents who asked to be placed on the waiting list in the event of a gardener who decides to not rent their plot for another year.
